Heritage Breed Animals are essential to the daily life of Button Farm. No family farm of the 19th century would have been complete without chickens, both for eggs and meat. Our chickens provide eggs for our farm family as well as eat insects that can damage our garden crops.

The centralization and industrialization of egg and meat production have led to a decline in the diversity of chicken breeds in America in the 20th century. We are part of a movement to preserve heritage breeds threatened with extinction.  Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpingtons, Brahmas, Welsummers, Dominiques, and Araucanas (Easter Eggers) comprise the breeds currently found at Button Farm.
