Maryland Emancipation Day 2025

 Join Button Farm as we celebrate our annual Maryland Emancipation Day Event in commemoration of the day in 1864 when Maryland changed its constitution to abolish slavery six months before the end of the Civil War. The program will feature speakers, self-guided tours of the farm’s museum garden and animal pens.  Snacks and cider provided!

Button Farm Living History Center will be open this Saturday only, June 29, 2024, for the 25th annual Heritage Days Weekend sponsored by Heritage Montgomery. This will be our first public event of the year and kicks off our summer season! Tour our heirloom museum garden, heritage breed animals, event pavilion and slave cemetery. Hands-on history activities for visitors of all ages depicting plantation life and the Underground Railroad in Maryland. Program includes: 


Steve Wilde, Button Farm’s new resident blacksmith, will introduce visitors to this fascinating historical skill. Learn about the blacksmith’s trade, its history in Montgomery County, and how some used their skills to forge their own freedom!

Chesapeake Fibershed Project will demonstrate methods for harvesting and processing flax into linen and will discuss their efforts to increase flax production locally. Learn about Button Farm’s project to make 19th-century-style clothing from flax grown in our Museum Garden.

From 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, Coming to the Table Montgomery County (CTTT MoCo) will lead a walk to the Slave Cemetery and facilitate a reflection circle as a way of honoring the enslaved ancestors. CTTT's mission is to acknowledge and heal wounds from racism rooted in the US history of slavery, by uncovering history, making connections, working toward healing, and taking action.  (Photo courtesy of Venetia Bailey)
