Heritage Breed Animals are essential to the daily life of Button Farm. Our chickens provide eggs for our farm family as well as eat insects that can damage our garden crops. Our Rhode Island Reds and Buff Orpingtons are two of the many breeds one would have found on 19th century Montgomery County farms.  Check our QR code to learn more about these special birds.

Our Heritage Chickens

No family farm of the 19th century would have been complete without chickens, both for eggs and meat. The centralization and industrialization of egg and meat production has led to a decline in the diversity of chicken breeds in America in the 20th century. We are part of a movement to preserve heritage breeds threatened with extinction.

Here at Button Farm you will currently find two heritage chicken breeds: Rhode Island Red and Buff Orpington. We have plans to introduce other breeds including Speckled Sussex, Welsummer, Brahmas, and Barred Plymouth Rock.
